SMTP25: the 20th anniversary

Our conference on "Sustainable Mobility, Transport and Power Generation" (formerly "The Working Process of the Internal Combustion Engine") took place for the 20th time from September 4-5, 2025 at the GRAZER CONGRESS and was again organized together with the (LEC - Large Engines Competence Center).

Environmental compatibility and sustainability are the central goals – and at the same time the greatest challenges – for the growing demand for mobility in passenger and freight transport as well as in energy production. The symposium is therefore dedicated to drive concepts that are being developed specifically for this purpose: combustion engines, fuel cells, and hybrid and electrified systems. The focus is on extremely ambitious CO₂ targets and the reduction of pollutant emissions to a ‘zero-impact’ level.

At this year's conference, which was once again held at Congress Graz, 38 specialist presentations by leading experts explained and discussed new approaches and concepts for overcoming the challenges on the road to sustainable drive systems. A separate parallel focus was once again dedicated to large-engine systems.

The participation of renowned speakers from international OEMs and leading global companies and research institutions such as AVL, BMW, Bosch, Daimler Truck, Everllance, FEV, Geislinger, Hyundai, INNIO Jenbacher, KTM, Liebherr, Toyota, Volkswagen, Wabtec and WinGD was particularly gratifying.

The symposium thus offers a unique overview of research and development across a range of industries – from motorcycles, cars and trucks, construction machinery, ship and locomotive drives to energy generation.

The year 2025 marked the 20th edition of the SMTP Symposium, which has been held every two years in Graz since 1987. The international conference can thus look back on a long tradition of continuous cutting-edge research and intensive exchange between science and industry.

Around 220 participants from over 15 countries took part in the anniversary event, discussing current trends and innovations in the field of sustainable drive systems with leading experts. The aim of the symposium is to highlight the importance of green solutions for mobility, transport and energy, to provide a well-founded overview of the state of the art and to bring together stakeholders from around the world.

For Prof. Helmut Eichlseder and Prof. Andreas Wimmer, it was a special anniversary – they will be passing the baton for SMTP27 to their successors.

This year's conference evening at the ‘Alte Universität’ was once again very well received and promoted the exchange of knowledge in a pleasant environment.

At the now traditional accompanying trade show in the foyer in front of the conference rooms, exhibitors were able to present their latest products and services to an interested specialist audience.
