The international research project HyMethShip is funded under Horizon 2020 and aims to reduce emissions from ship propulsion systems. The planned marine propulsion system should not only drastically reduce emissions such as SOx, NOx and particulate matter compared to conventional ship propulsion systems, but above all bring CO2 emissions to almost zero. The hydrogen can be burned in the propulsion engine with low emissions, while the CO2 is stored on board and can subsequently be reused on land for methanol production. In this way, a closed carbon cycle can be realized.

In this project, the IVT takes over consulting and simulation activities in different work packages, primarily the design, layout and calculation of a technology demonstrator, which is built and operated on the premises of the Graz University of Technology.
