Description of project

The Koralm railway tunnel, with a length of roughly 32 km, is the core part of the new high speed rail connection between Graz and Klagenfurt as part of the Transeuropean railway corridor VI between Poland and Italy. The FVTmbH is commissioned for the tender design of the ventilation of the tunnel as well as for the ventilation and cooling of the electrical installations of the cross passages within the tunnel. In addition, the emergency stop and evacuation station in the centre part of the tunnel will be equipped with a high pressure water mist system in order to reduce the fire size in an unlikely incident situation.

The Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics of Graz University of Technology is supporting this project by providing in depth analysis of the thermal problems in the cross passages as well as in the theoretical considerations concerning the water mist system.
